Comparison of two advertisements for two TV Channels, ITV and Sky Sports.

The second advertisement I am going to look at is an advertisement from the tabloid newspaper The Sun. This advertisement is for the TV Channel Sky SportsHD. The original image was in colour, but when I scanned it onto the computer it turned in Black and White.

Denotation

The original image was in colour. The next was in white. The man on the left is called Carlo Ancelotti, he is the football manager of Chelsea. He is wearing a Black coat and black gloves and he has grey hair. The man on the right is the football manager of Manchester City, he is called Roberto Mancini. He is wearing a Blue and White scarf, a Black coat with a white piece of paper in his pocket, and he has grey hair.

Carlo Ancelotti has his hands around his mouth as if he is shouting. Roberto Mancini is pointing at something. In the middle of the two men is the name of the sky. Above "sky" is the text "OLD RIVALS. NEW CLUBS." Below "sky" is the text "TODAY: CHELSEA v MAN CITY FROM 12PM" and "PLUS STOKE CITY v Arsenal from 5:15pm. In the top left hand corner is the name of the sponsor of the league "Barclays Premier League". In the bottom left hand corner is the website address skysports.com. In the bottom of the right-hand corner is the logo of the channel "Sky SportsHD".

Connotation

The Managers

The advertisement is a lot smaller then the advertisement for Ant and Dec.The image, unlike Ant & Dec lacks amusement, it is a very dull advert compared to Ant and Dec. This advertisement for Sky Sports has been edited. The two men have obviously been in different photos, and have been pasted onto this advertisement. Carlo Ancelotti is shouting, whilst Roberto Mancini is pointing, this connotates how competitive the teams are. Roberto Mancini is wearing a blue and white scarf which connotates the Manchester City Football team. Both managers are wearing Black outfits which connotates authority.

The Background

The background is of blurred fans which connotates the football fans. The background allows the other aspects of the advertisement to stand out.

The Text

The text is boring compared to the text on the Ant and Dec advertisement. The network "sky" is in the biggest text to connotate they have the authority to show the sports.The text at the top "OLD RIVALS. NEW CLUBS." is short this connotates that this channel has an impact on sports. The text "TODAY:CHELSEA v MAN CITY FROM 12PM" is in a bold white style this connotates that it is a match to watch out for. Underneath this text in a smaller font style is "PLUS STOKE CITY v ARSENAL FROM 5:15PM" this connotates this is another match to watch out for, but it is not the main match to watch.

The logo and website address

In the bottom right-hand corner is the actual TV channel it is being shown on which is "Sky SportsHD" . In the bottom left hand corner is the website address skysports.com. This is to connotate that this is the channel to watch and this is the website to look at.

After looking at both advertisements I realised that the advertisement for "Push the Button" was more entertaining then the "sky sports advertisement" because, itv1 is an entertaining channel, whereas sky sports is an actual sports channel and does not entertain. I felt that the sky advertisement was put together, and not much effort had been put into the advertisement. The Ant and Dec advertisement had a lot of effort put into it. The advertisement for sky is a lot more serious and official then the itv advert which is entertaining and laid back. I preferred overall the Ant and Dec advert.

Comparison of two advertisements for two TV channels, ITV 1 and Sky Sports.

The first advertisement I am going to look at is an advertisement from the tabloid newspaper the Daily Star. This advertisement is about the new TV Show on ITV 1, the new TV Show it is advertising is called "Push the Button". The image I am using, I scanned out of the newspaper. The original advertisement is in colour, unfortunately the advertisement ended up Black and White once scanned onto the computer.

Denotation

The original image was in colour. The background on the original copy is Red. Ant and Dec are both wearing a Black suit and Ties and a White Shirt. The text is in Yellow, with the ITV 1 Logo in the usual Yellow and White. The ITV website address is in white. There is a Maltesers Logo in the top hand right corner which was cropped.

The denotation of the image is of Dec pressing Ant's head down, into his suit. Coming out of Ant's head is some text that reads "PUSH THE BUTTON. ANT & DEC'S NEW GAME SHOW. STARTS TONIGHT AT 7:45PM". Below the text is the logo for the TV Channel ITV1, and in a smaller white text is the website address: itv.com/push. In the top right-hand corner is the sponsors of the show "Maltesers."

Connotation

Ant and Dec

Dec is pushing Ant's head into his suit, this is connotating the name of the show "Push the Button", Ant is the button and Dec is pushing that button. Ant and Dec are both wearing Black and White suits connotates authority and smartness. They have the authority over all the others on the show, because they are the hosts. Dec has his tongue pulled out and is looking straight ahead at the camera, which connotates he is cheeky. Ant is looking up at Dec that connotates he is inferior compared to Dec. It could be said that it is play on their heights because Ant is taller then Dec. The way Ant has his eyes darting towards Dec, and looking up at the same time connotates he is annoyed at Dec for using his head as if he is a button.

The Text

The first like of text "PUSH THE BUTTON" curves towards the top page. This is in the largest font size, and is in a bold chunky font style. It is the largest text on the page because it connotates this is the name of the show and needs to be seen. The next line of text is "ANT & DEC'S NEW GAME SHOW". Again this line of the text curves upwards towards the top of the page.The font on this page is again in a chunky yellow bold font style. However, the text increases in size on this line. The sort of show it is which is a game show is in the largest size on that line. The next line of text that reads "STARTS TONIGHT AT 7.45PM" this curves upwards then across the page. The text is again in a chunky bold yellow font. The reason why the text curves is so it connotates what noise the button makes. Below all this text is the ITV1 logo and the address of the website, this allows people to know what channel it is on, and what website to go on to find out more about the website.

The Background colour

The background colour is in two shades of red a lighter red and a darker red. As the show is sponsored by Maltesers the background colour is red which connotates the Maltesers brand. The way two shades of red is positioned connotates sound waves. The sound waves are again coming from the button. All the text is in Yellow so it stands out from the red background . The Maltesers logo is in the top right hand corner because they are the company, that sponsor the show. It is quite small, but the audience will notice it.

I think this advertisement is very amusing. The whole advertisement connotates comedy and amusement. It is an advertisement which will put a smile on the viewers face. Ant & Dec as the presenters, will definitely amuse the audience. The way they have posed on the page will definately make the audience laugh. When I looked at the advertisement a smile was immediately brought to my face.

The main media text I had to develop was a website for a brand new TV Channel, TV4U. The website had to include at least three hyperlinked pages, and I had to use original images, audio and video.

I designed my website using the software Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 and CS4. This software allows people to develop their own website using codes and a range of tools to develop the website.

Housestyle

It will be seen that throughout the website I have used a housestyle. A house style is where something stays the same on the website. The housestyle of my website is the layout. On my website each page at the top has a Logo, a banner that reads “the channel 4 U, and the menu bar below the logo and the banner. This is to keep some kind of consistency going throughout the website. Also it allows people to know how they can navigate through the website, because the menu bar is always at the top of page. The background also remains the same throughout the website this also counts as part of the house style.

The Logo

The logo I designed on the software Adobe Fireworks. I used the ellipse tool to draw a circle. I then chose a Black fill effect background from the assets library. I used the text box tool to draw a text box. The text “TV4U” is in the font style of Base 05 and is bold. The reason I chose the logo was because the dark colour connotate night, this is when TV4U starts. I asked young people what they thought of the logo and they said although the logo was dark, it represented their emotions, how the white font connotates their happiness and the dark colours connotate their unhappiness. A young person I asked about the logo said it connotates the rollercoaster of emotions a teenager feels the dark colours represent anger and the white font represents calmness. After looking at existing websites, the logo of the TV Channel or the website is always the link back to the homepage, people seem to recognise this. So to keep the similar convention going, I made my logo the link back to the homepage.

The Banner

The Banner I again designed on the software Adobe Fireworks. I designed a banner because after looking at existing TV Websites, I realised that many websites have banners. I designed a banner that would stick to the colour scheme. The banner is in dark colours to represent the teenagers. The banner ahs a slogan on of the TV Channel. The slogan is “the Channel 4 U” this is to allow people to develop the recognition for TV4U.

Menu Bar

To design the menu bar I used the table tool. I split the table into three columns, and one row. The links of the website went in the menu bar. Each link, Programmes on TV4U, TV4U Schedule and Pick of the Week, is in a Purple underlined font. This is the typical convention of website. The links are always underlined, this is how the users know that these are links. The links allow people to navigate around the website quickly and easily. I did not want to make my links in the menu bar too complicated because I wanted the audience to recognise the links easily. I kept the menu bar at the top of every page so people knew where to go to navigate off the page.

Background Colour

I had to decide upon a background colour that would represent my young audience. I originally went for Black, but then I realised black connotates black and white movies and my website is full of contemporary colours, so I opted for a colour that was going to connotate youth. I went on the internet to look at the different meanings of colours. After reading about the different colours on Youth, light blue caught my eye. After looking on the internet the main connotations of Blue is youth, truth and peace all the values of young people. The main shade of blue called Turquoise is the main shade of blue which connotates youth and communication. This would be a good colour to use on my website, because I am trying to communicate with the audience.

Homepage

I start with the housestyle of the Blue background; the logo, the banner and menu bar all being at the top. Underneath is a poster that is advertising the show New Rock Music Show. I created the poster on Adobe Fireworks. The image I used was the NRM image. I tried to take an image that had connotations of rock. I felt I did this because I found grey hoodies that had connotations of rock, and I did our make up and hair so there was connotations of rock. On the poster I drew blue boxes that contains text. The colour Blue I used again because it connotates youth, and Sweet and Sour are full of youth. The text is in a white font colour and white connotates innocence, and teenagers are innocent. The text I included was all relevant to the launch of the TV Show, I need to get across to the audience when the brand new channel begins.

Underneath is the white writing that connotates innocence. I included an introduction as a welcoming to the website. I wanted to welcome the audience and give them information to what this website has to offer. The text stand sout from the blue background and is easy to read.

Programmes on TV4U

This page informs the audience about the new programmes that are on TV4U. I again kept the housestyle going making it clear how people can navigate.

I included a video that has all the relevant information of what programmes are on TV4U and when they are on. On the video I included a piece of music by Black Eyed Peas called “I Gotta Feelin”. The song is about having a good time. That is what my TV Channel is about and that is young people having a good time in life. “I Gotta Feelin has positive connotations. The music is very upbeat and goes well with the video as the video is trying to get all the brand new talent across to the audience.

Underneath the videos is the images that represent the shows. Each image is recognisable and people can relate to the images. I tried to capture images that stuck to the typical conventions of teenagers, fashion, music and emotions. I felt I did this well, as I tried to use as many young people as I could in the images I captured. Underneath the image in the font style of elephant is the names of the shows. The reason I used he font style elephant is because it is chunky lettering, and looks fun. The font style elephant has connotations of fun because the letters are round and not too straight edge. I didn’t want the images to take up the whole of the page so I made them smaller.

Underneath the images is the different information on the shows. The first piece of information is related back to the first image of “Festival Time”. I created the heading in Adobe Fireworks. The font style is Cambria and is in the size 58. This is so it stands out. I continued with the font colour blue because it goes with the colour scheme but also continues with the connotations of Youth. All relevant pieces of information is in white. However, the genre of the TV is in light blue so the audience know what sort of genre of TV they are watching. The information I included was when the show is on, who it star and what the show is about. I kept on designing all the headers in Adobe Fireworks to keep the consistency going and kept to the layout of the information:

3) Who it stars

4) What the show is about.

I wanted people to find the information out quickly and easily.

TV4U Schedule

The housestyle continues on this page. I have kept the same background colour for consistency. At the top, underneath is the introduction to what the page is about. It allows people to make the decision on whether they have come to the right page to get the information.

Underneath the introduction is a table, this is the schedule for the first night of TV4U. The table is split into three columns:

What is it about?

The first column Name of the Programme is in the font style Franklin Gothic Demi and is in White. This stands out from th Blue background and people can read the name of the show easily. The time of the show is in a light yellow. The light yellow for me connotates sun set, and all my shows are on in the evening/ night. Again the font style used is Franklin Gothic Demi. I did not want to swap amongst colours too much. In the last column in the colour blue: What is it about? I put the text in blue because all the shows I have included connotate youth with the storylines they have. Around the schedule are the images representing the shows, each near the row of information that is relevant to that show.

Pick of the Week

This page gives information on the show that should be looked out for. I wanted to inform the audience about the great talent that this new TV Channel has to offer. Under the housestyle is the poster I designed on Fireworks. The poster is advertising the show teen models. Half the poster is in dark blue and the other half is the image of my sister. In the poster is 3 stars that read “Is she the next Teen Model?” Under the image is the time of the show and what day it I son. There is also information on the show in the font style Franklin Gothic Demi. I have continued with the colour blue on the posters because it connotates youth, and as the audience can see the person in the poster is very young.

On TV4U is an image of a programme called TV4U Sport Show. Below is the image representing the programme TV4U Sport Show.

The Pose

There is no particular pose in this image, I had permission to capture the image. I went to a rugby match my brother was playing in. I wanted to capture the image of when everyone was working together, the scrum my brother is in connotates teamwork. This was an image that I caught when the rugby match was in full play.

Make-Up and Clothes

The boys were just in the team kit, none of the boys wore make-up! I did not want the guys to dress up, I wanted the image to connotate the natural side of sport, just of the guys in the normal team kit.

Lighting

The main lighting I used was natural lighting, there was no artificial lighting used in this image.

The image was taken by me using my digital camera.

Image of Grammar School Road

On TV4U is an image of the programme called Grammar School Road. Below is the image that represents the programme Grammar School Road.

The Pose

The denotation is 5 girls together at college. I wanted the image to be as natural as possible. The programme is about college life. I wanted the image to connotate the natural side of teenagers. I told everyone in the photograph to be just themselves, they could smile frown pull face, they could do whatever they wanted. The image was took in the college refectory, because most of the dramas happen outside of the classroom. The front three people in the photograph have the heads together and are smiling., The two girls at the back are smiling and are just getting their heads in. The whole image just connotates the natural side of all the girls.

Make-up and clothes

I told everyone in the image to just wear what they would usually wear. I did not want the image to connotate any fakeness. Some of the girls are wearing make-up and some are not. I just wanted the image to have a funky natural look.

The Lighting

The main lighting was coming from the refectory lights, and other light was natural daylight coming through the window.

The image was taken by me whilst at college. I told everyone how to post, what they should wear and the lighting we should use.

Image of Around the World

On TV4U is a programmed called Around the World. This is about travelling around the world. Below is the image representing the show Around the World.

The Scenery

I took this image when I had a once in a lifetime chance to go to Sharjah. Sharjah is near Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. The United Arab Emirates is made up of 7 states. I wanted to take the image when it was the most beautiful. I wanted to capture an aspect of Sharjah which was beautiful and would connotate the beauty of the city. This image is of Al Qasbar. This is where all the restaurants and bars all, down the central part of the Al Qasbar is a river. This image was taken at sun set which connotates beauty. The sunset shining down on the river connotates peacefulness.

The components in the Image

At the back of the image is buildings being constructed. This, however, does not ruin the beauty of the image. The reason why I wanted to capture the buildings being constructed is because I wanted the buildings to connotate the development of Sharjah. Also at the back of the image is the Sharjah Wheel, I captured this in the image as well because I wanted to show what the tourists are attracted to. The main component of the image I focused on however, is the river going down the central of Al Qasbar. The river was so mesmerising, with the sunset reflect off it. The river is meant to connote the natural beauty of Sharjah.

Lighting

The only lighting in this image is the natural sunlight. But on the right-hand side of the image is the lights along the sidewalk.

I captured this image whilst I was on holiday. I used my digital camera to capture the image. I did not edit the image in any sort of way because I felt it did not need to be edited.

Image of Teen Models

On TV4U there is a programme called TEEN MODELS. Below is the image representing the show Teen Models.

The Pose

She is looking directly at the camera which is connotating she is confident with the way she looks. She has her hand on the side of her head, this is the typical sort of model pose. Her shoulders are relaxed connotating she is comfortable with her position.Hannah has her lips in a pouting position that connotes a modelling look.

Make-Up and Clothes

She has a fashionable dress on from Topshop. The make-up she has on is very subtle, this is to connotate a hint of innocence.I straightened her hair and brushed it back this gives the typical model look.

Lighting

The original lighting we used was just normal daylight. I used norm daylight to connotate a natural atmosphere. As this is an image for a modelling show I did not want it to be like a proper modelling image. I felt the natural daylight did not work so i put the image onto adobe fireworks and changed how light the photo was, I even deleted the background.

The image was taken by me. I told Hannah how to pose, I chose the make-up and clothes and the setting.

NRM Music Show

On TV4U is a programme called NRM Music Show. Below is the image representing the NRM Music Show.

The Pose

We are both stood in front of the camera looking straight at the camera, as if we are looking at the reader making eye contact as if to say buy this magazine. I am on the right and I am looking straight at the camera and is pulling a small cheeky smile, and I have my head buried into hers but I am not really striking a proper pose unlike my sister Hannah on the left. Hannah on the left is staring straight at the camera, and has her fingers in front of her eyes, and is pulling a pout at the reader. She has her head slanted to the side.

The Looks

From looking at other photographs on rock magazines such as Kerrang! The hairstyles on the artists a lot of the time is the same. They all have their hair cover their eyes a bit. Hannah has her fringe framed around her face and nearly covers her eyes but you can see both her deep blue eyes which are meant to hypnotise the reader. She has Black make-up which makes her eyes stand out more. She is wearing a Grey hoodie which makes her pale skin and Blonde hair stand out. She has her hood up which frames her face. I have my fringe over one of my eyes, so you can only see one of my eyes, and also my head is slanted so this just flattens my hair. You can see one of my eyes through my fringe which is staring up at the reader. I am not wearing as much dark make-up as Hannah. My hair frames my face and makes my facial features stand out. I am also wearing a grey hoodie to match my sisters as I wanted to wear something which is matching.

The Lighting

The light came from a lamp which I situated at the back of us. This did cast a slight shadow over us. The light did bounce off my hair which made my sisters hair look blonder.

Image of Family Life

Another programme on TV4U, is a programme called Family life. Below is an image representing the new TV Show. I took this image when my Dad came home for Half Term.

The Pose

We are in a restaurant at night, I have set my camera up. I wanted us all to be close together, cuddled together to connotate being a united family unit. We are all smiling to connotate being a "happy family". We all have our arms around my Dad to show that my Dad is the dominant male.

Make-Up and Clothes

None of us are wearing make-up, I wanted the image to be as natural as possible. By not wearing make-up I am trying to connotate that we are a happy innocent family. We are in ordinary clothing, I didn't want anyone to dress up for this photograph because it is meant to be as natural as possible.

The Lighting

The lighting was already dim in the restaurant, I wanted dim lighting because it connotates a relaxing atmosphere. I positioned us under a light, so the light would shine on our faces and show the smiles on our face that connotes we are happy.

I again took this photograph with my digital camera. but I put the camera on self timer.

Image of Festival Time

On the new TV Channel called TV4U, I have created a programmed called "Festival Time" I used an image that I took myself.

This image was taken at the ballet festival in October 2009. Ballet Festivals are held at schools and in halls. This image is of my younger sister Hannah, I had permission off my sister and her best friend Charlotte to take a picture of them.

The Pose

In this photograph I positioned my sister in a classic ballet pose. The way her arms are positioned connotates that she is elegant, and calm. She is stood straight which connotates she is confident within herself. She has her head up high and is smiling which connotates she is proud and confident, and ready to dance.My sisters best friend Charlotte is in the background, I instructed her that she needed to wear a colour that connotes innocence, we found a white t-shirt, the white makes her stand out. I wanted to capture her as she did her hair, to show that doing your hair and make up goes on at dance festivals.

Make-Up and Clothes

I did my sisters make-up, I used dark colours on her eyes to define her eyes, her eye colour stands out. The dark colours I have used connotate youth. I learnt from looking at photographs that dark colours can connotate youth. The red lipstick I used, I used to make her lips stand out. The red lipstick shows she is smiling. Her hair is scraped back into a classic bun which denotates that she is a dancer. The purple tutu connotates youth and innocence. The purple makes her skin stand out. The purple defines how she has positioned her body. I placed my sister in a tut because this is about the dance festivals, and tutus usually connotate dancing.

Lighting

I used the lighting which was already there. The show is a reality show and reality show, shows what is really happening, and I wanted everything to seem natural, so I used the lights which were already there it seemed to work well.

I took the photograph with my digital camera at the October Dance Festival.

Planning the Website

I am in the process of planning for my new website. The new website is going to represent the new TV Channel TV4U. The audience I am aiming my website and channel at is young people aged 15-21 year olds, however, anyone who wants to be entertained and informed can go on the website or watch the TV Channel.

My website is going to have 4 pages called: The Homepage; Programmes on TV4U; TV4U Schedule; Pick of the Week. The four pages will each inform the audience about TV4U.

I have already chosen the logo I am going to use, which is the Black logo which I published earlier on in the blog.

Now I have to make the decision on what layout,background, fonts, images, information and videos I am going to use. All the images are going to be taken by me, and all the videos I use will be filmed by me.

My website, TV4U, is going to have a housestyle. A housestyle is where components of the website stay the same. The components I have decided to keep the same is the design at the top of each page. As the can see from the template of each of the pages, the logo, the banner and the menu bar stay together at the top of every page. This adds consistency to the website. The rest of the layout will change on each of the pages of my website because there will be videos, and different amounts of images.

Background

There are two types of backgrounds are Block colour backgrounds and fill effect backgrounds. From looking at existing TV websites, I noticed that the backgrounds of the existing TV websites, were block colours, and that each website used at the most one or two block colours. None of the existing TV websites used fill effects. On my website, TV4U, I will use block colours, NO fill effects.

I have looked at colours which connotate youth. Colours such as Blue,Green,Pink, Black, Purple and Orange all connotate youth

Blue connotes youth, spirituality, truth, peace, distance. A certain shade of colour called "Turquoise" is the most well known shade of Blue which symbolizes Blue. Turquoise is meant to have a soothing relaxing effect on people. Turquoise is also suppose to symbolize communication. Turquoise is a colour which I will consider using as the background because my audience is a young age group. Turquoise s suppose to symbolize youth, which is my audience My website is meant to communicate with young people, and turquoise connotes communication.

Green connotes nature, intelligence, spring, fertility, youth,environment and youth. Green sends the message across of being reborn and spring time. Green is another good colour to consider using on my website because Green also symbolizes the youthful audience I aiming my website at. Green is meant to connote intelligence. Intelligence is also associated with being youthful. I am very undecided on the colour green, as a background colour for my website because Green is seen as a dirty colour.

Pink connotates spring, gratitude, admiration, appreciation, sympathy, socialism, femininity, health, famine, love, June, joy, flirtatiousness, child like features and innocence. This is a colour I am definitely NOT considering of suing on my website. Although it connotates being youthful, the colour does not represent both males and females. The colour I use on my website needs to represent both genders. The colour Pink is too light and is not a suitable colour to use on the TV4U website.

Black is said to be a multi-dimensional colour that has the meaning classic or new. However, it connotes death, and evil. Black also connotes modernity, absence, power, sophistication,elegance, formality, elegance, mystery, wealth, style, fear, emptiness, darkness, seriousness, rebellion, conventionality, anarchism, sorrow, unity, and professionalism. I am unsure on whether to use the colour Black. Although I know from looking at existing websites, which aim at a young audience, that Black is sued to symbolize youth, I also know that Black has a lot of negatives connected to it including death. I am going to have to seriously consider whether Black is a suitable background colour for my website.

Purple in today western culture is supposed to connotate royalty and nobility. Purple also connotates wisdom, envy, creativity, spirituality, wealth, wisdom, enlightenment, flamboyance, mourning and pride. It seems that Purple connotates youth very well. But there is a problem, because the colour purple is associated a lot with being feminine. So the colour purple will not represent both genders. The colour Purple is not going to be used as the background colour.

Orange connotates energy, happiness, cheer, heat, balance, nourishment, enthusiasm, flamboyance, fire, autumn, desire and playfulness. Playfulness, and energy are all associate with being young. But I am not considering to use Orange on my website, because I feel it is far too bright for the website, however, it does symbolize youth well.

Fonts

On the website I am going to have to consider what the best font style, size, colour and shape is going to be for the writing. The colour of the font is all going to depend on the background colour. The background colour I use will have a huge impact on the font colour, size, style and shape I will use.

Information Images and Video

The Information is all going to be made up by me, All the programmes on the new TV Channel, TV4U, have been made up. The information about the programmes will have to be made up but the information will make sense.
