Final Design of Logo

This is the logo for the new TV Channel website. I designed the logo on Fireworks by using the shapes tool and text tool. The logo is very simple. However, all logos for TV channels are not overly complicated. i did not want my logo to be overly complicated.
The font stands out to the viewers eye. The font style is Base 05, and is Bold. The font size is large. I decided to put the font in white so it stands out from the dark background. The dark circle makes the rest of the font stand out and catch the viewers eye. People will immediately recognise this logo as its simple to remember. The more recognised and remembered the more viewers the new TV Channel would get.

Logo for the TV Channel

My TV Channel is called for TV4U and is aimed at an audience aged 15-21 years old. This logo denotates a yellow rig which represents the sun. The Orange font stands out from the Yellow Background. The Yellow circle connotes the morning sun. The circle is very bright and stands out to the viewers eye. The circle is in the shape of the sun. The Orange font which stands out to the audiences eye, adds to the morning breakfast look of the logo. I feel this logo will not represent my TV Channel because it does not represent the TV programmes on offer. The programme son TV4U are not morning breakfast shows. However, the colour scheme of this logo would be suitable for a website.
Again this logo is very bright. This logo denotates a Orange Oval box, with thick bold Yellow writing. The logo connotes the morning because of the bright colours. The Orange connotes the hot morning sun. The Thick Bold Yellow writing stands out from the Orange background. The whole logo connotes the morning again, and I feel this logo does not represent the TV Channel. Although, I do feel it would work on a website, but the colours are too bright and do not represent the young audience.
This logo is very different to my first too logo. My first two logos were very bright. This logo on the other hand, is very dark colours represent a young audience. The logo is meant to connote being young. After looking at different existing Television websites, I realised that TV websites such as Channel 4 use dark logos, however, the dark logos they use, they put on bright colours. From this i realised that if I wanted my logo to connote being young, I would have to use dark colours. However, I had to be sure that my logo did not copy the Channel 4 Logo. This logo would work well in a newspaper advertisement and the website. Although, older people I have spoken to do not like the dark colours, whereas, the younger people I spoke to said the opposite, that they liked the dark colours I used, as they felt it represented them well. I think this could be a logo i may use for the website.
This logo is very different to the first two logos I designed. The logo denotates, a Maroon box with Orange writing. Again this logo connotes youth. Although I don't feel this logo will work as well on a website or in a Newspaper. I don't think I will be using this logo.

All the above are possibilities of logos that I could use. I designed all the logos on Adobe Fireworks.

Website Structure

This is a diagram showing the website structure. The website structure I am using is Mesh. The web structure Mesh links all the pages on the website together. The viewer does not have to keep going back to the homepage to access the different pages you can reach any page from anywhere on the website.

Flowchart for the new website TV4U.

This is the flowchart for my website it shows that the pages are linked. I designed this flowchart on Microsoft Publisher.

Comparison of existing TV Channel Websites

For my Advanced Portfolio I have to design a website for a new TV Channel. I am going to look at different already existing TV websites to give me idea, I will not copy their ideas,I will only use them as a template. The two commercial websites I will look at are:

ITV

Channel 4

The second website I will look at is the Channel 4 Website. Below is screenshots of the Channel 4 Website.

Connotation

The background throughout is Black. At the top of the Channel 4 Homepage, is the links to the different channels which are also under Channel 4, they are "Film, More4, E4 Music and C4 Blogs". In the right hand corner at the very top is a search box which allows viewers to search the website for their favourite TV Programmes. Underneath is a giant picture of a Vampire with text saying " WELCOME TO CHANNEL 4 QUENCH YOUR THIRST... FRESH NEW TRUE BLOOD NOW ON 4oD" and "TV LISTINGS PROGRAMMES WATCH 4oD EXPLORE". There is also a big stamp of the Channel 4 logo, so people know they are on the Channel 4 website. Underneath the big picture of the Vampire is a TV Schedule which informs viewers when there favourite programmes are on. Below the TV Schedule is two boxes both in Grey. The box on the left hand side gives information on a programme called " The Bigamist Bride: My Five Husbands" this is advertising the show which will be on Channel 4, and is letting viewers know what the show is about. The box on the right hand side is the "EXPLORE" box which offers links to webpages based on Food, Homes, Film, 4Car, News and See All. At the bottom of the Channel 4 webpage is more links to more webpages.

Denotation

The image of the Vampire lets the viewers know that this image is representing True Blood, and that it is on 4oD to watch and catch up on. It denotates that this is the show which should be watched, and which is jam packed with entertainment. The quotation "QUENCH YOUR THIRST" denotates that people should give in to their obsession with True Blood. The images of the other programmes on Channel 4 denotate that these are other programmes which are popular and should be watched by people. The images are not as large so gives the message that these programmes may not be as popular. The bigger fonts on the page denotate that this is th emost important information that needs to be known especially about 4oD and True Blood.

Conclusion

I prefer this website to the ITV website. It does not cram too much information in like the ITV website, and gets straight to the point, it does not go on like the ITV website about information which is not as important. The Channel 4 used more images to get across their messages, and it works. The largest image of the vampire gets across the message that this programme has to be watched. Unlike the ITV website which does not advertise their programmes well at all, and just use tiny images which can be hardly seen. Although there is only one background which is Black it made to look interesting by the images, the Black background lets the other components of the website stand out, the ITV website made nothing stand out. This has given me the idea that maybe I don't necessarily have to use bright colours I can use, the images I take to make the website look interesting. I will use the Channel 4 website as a template.

Comparisom of existing TV Channel Websites

For my Advanced Portfolio I have to design a website for a new TV Channel. I am going to look at different TV websites to give me ideas, i will not copy their ideas, i will only use them as a template. The two commercial websites I will look at are:
ITV
Channel 4

The first one I am going to look at is the ITV homepage. Below is the screenshots of the ITV homepage.

Connotation

At the top in the left hand corner is the logo of the website "itv.com", this stands out to the viewers eye and they immediately know they are in the right website. Below is a menu which stretches over 2 lines. This is not as clear for the viewer, and is very hard to read. Below that is a box, which shows an image saying Football. If you click on the buttons below it which says Football, The X Factor and This Morning, you will see different images representing each of the shows. Each of the images are hyperlinks to the webpage of that particular programme. Underneath that is 3 images advertising the chance to catch up on your favourite programmes with ITV Programmes. Underneath the three images is a section dedicated to the TV Programmes "Emmerdale" there is a brief piece about Emmerdale, next to the article on Emmerdale is an article dedicated to Drama which has an image of a programme called "Gossip Girl". There are two hyperlinks which lead a viewer to the ITV Player webpage and the X factor Webpage. They stand out to the eye. Underneath the hyperlinks is what people are thinking about, which is X Factor. Underneath the comments are three boxes which sau "What's On," "Forums" and "Shows A-Z" these stand out to the eye, and make the viewer want to know more.At the very bottom of the ITV webpage is a Black and Grey Box which offers more links to different websites which come under ITV.com.

Denotation

The images used show attractive images of the different TV shows which are on offer on ITV. All the images denotate that the programmes which are shown on ITV are interesting to watch, and have colourful characters to watch. The images relate to each of the programmes shown on ITV.

The more important links like the ITV Player Links have larger images which denotate that these are the webpages which should be looked at. Especially the X Factor Hyperlink. Right in the middle of the page, is a hyperlink which says "The X Factor hot clips" this stands out most, which denotates that this is one of the webpages which should be looked at. The bigger the hyperlink the more the viewer wants to know about it, and so that particular webpage gets more views.

The dull colours denotate that this website is boring. This is very decieving and the website is quite interesting. The colours I use on my webpage need to be attractive and need to denotate that my website is not boring to look at.

The big grey box at the bottom which again gives more hyperlinks to different webpages. The grey box denotates that these sits are good but maybe not as good as other webpages. Grey represents dullness, so the grey box denotates that these websites are boring which sends out the wrong message to viewers.

Conclusion

In my opinion the ITV webpage is boring and not attractive to the eye. It sends the wrong sort of message to people. It offers plenty of hyperlinks, but the dull dark colours denotate that the websites are very dull to look at. i will not make this mistake, because I want the website to be attractive to the eye, and not be boring to look at. I want to send a message out saying that the programmes on my new TV channel are brilliant to watch.

The ITV layout is very basic, but the positive is, it is clear to the viewer which shows are on offer to watch, Unfortunately some of the fonts are too small to read so not all hyperlinks can be noticed.

Names for TV Channel

I will be designing a website which represents a new TV Channel. I am going to think of different names for the new TV Channel, and I will decide which is the best name for the TV Channel. The name of the TV Channel will be the name of the website.

The new TV Channel will entertain people. I will entertain people by showing their favourite TV Shows.

Put Your Feet Up
This name is not catchy enough and people won’t remember the name. The name does not relate to the TV Channel.

Best of British TV
This gives a clue to what the channel gives which the best of British TV. This name is more catchy and easier to remember, however, it is still too long to remember. The name needs to be short and snappy.

On the Box
“On The Box” is a name for the TV what a lot of people use. “On the Box” refers to what is on the TV, so when someone mentions the new TV Channel “On the Box” everyone would know what that person is talking about. The name is catchy and easy to remember as many people use the term.

TV4U
This name is most appropriate. It is very short and easy to remember an very catchy. I will use this name for my new TV Channel. It slips off the tongue when said, and puts across that this is only for you.

LIIAR-My new TV Channel

LIIAR-My TV Website

The website I am going to be designing is for a new TV Channel. I will be choosing a name for my new TV Channel. The choosing of the name of the new website will be chosen soon.

Language

The language of the new TV Website is the design, layout, video, images and audio extracts I use.

Design

The colours of the background I use have to blend together and not clash. The background colours have to make the fonts, images and videos stand out to the viewers eye, because I want my audience to know what my TV Channel has to offer.

Layout

The layout needs to be organized and not too cluttered so all information can be seen. The layout needs to be attractive to the audience’s eye.

Video, Images and Audio Extracts

The videos, images and audio extracts have to be relevant to what TV programmes my new TV Channel show. The Images need to be attractive to the eye and clear, whilst the videos need to entertain viewers.

Institution

The institution will be the new TV Channel designing the website. I am not sure of the name of the new website, the next stage is to decide the new name of the new TV Channel.

Ideology

My website will entertain and inform audiences about the TV Programmes which are on offer for viewers. My website needs to be entertaining and not boring for viewers who want to know about their favourite programmes, however, at the same time it needs to get all the relevant information across.

Audience

The audience of my website is young viewers aged 15-21 years old who want to be entertained and informed. The TV Channel will be for both genders.

Representation

My TV Channel is going to be representing a young age group in today's society, my website will reflect the TV Channel. The website will represent the young audience and the actual TV Channel. The website is representing the TV Channel because it is a way of advertising the programmes which are on the TV Channel. The programmes which feature on the website will be reflexive of its audience.

LIIAR- Soap Operas

LIIAR -Soap Operas

In the UK Soap Opera’s began on the radio on the BBC. In 1951 the BBC brought the public the radio soap opera The Archers, which is now the world’s longest running soap opera.

Soap Opera’s on the TV did not begin until 1960, when Coronation Street was first broadcasted. TV Soap Opera’s have now been around for 49 years ranging from teenage soaps to family soaps.

Language

The language of Soap Opera’s consists of the mise-en-scene, cinematography, Editing Sound, and Narrative. The mise-en-scene is the familiar settings such as a street, the homes, the workplace, and social meeting places such as pubs. This creates verisimilitude which is how close to reality it really is. Iconography within the mise-en-scene immediately identifies the sub-genre, for example blue lights, scalpels, plasters identify the sub-genre is medical. Cinematography ensures the continuity. The Camera angles show character interactions and emotions which creates empathy with the audience. The sound is diegetic and non-diegetic. The diegetic sound is dialogue and sounds which are coming from within the scene. The dialogue tells the storyline in the soap opera. The non-diegetic sound is the theme tune of the soap opera. The sound and dialogue creates a balance between the verisimilitude and the drama. The music is used to punctuate the action, create effects and underline the emotions in the scene. The Narrative is visually presented and needs the audience’s understanding of the story/plot. The stories on a soap opera involve, crime, romance, disabilities, teenage issues, contemporary social issues which are in society today.

Ideology

The ideology in a Soap Opera is communicated through the narrative. The Narrative is the storyline which is told through the characters communicating. The storyline usually involves money issue, health issues and love issues which the audience can empathize with. The idea behind a soap opera is to create an understanding to different issues which are around today.

Institution

The institution is the production company which produce the Soap Opera. For examples Granada Television produce Coronation Street. The institution have to do a good job of producing a quality soap opera which audiences can relate to.

Audience

The audience of soap opera’s is the societies which are around today. Everyone of all ages watch soap operas. I looked on the internet at well known soap operas and the amount of people they get viewing the soap opera, I looked at families and teenagers. The Soap Operas I looked at were Coronation Street, and Eastenders for families. I found that in early 2009 on average 9.41 million people tuned in to watch Coronation Street, whilst on average 9.36 million people tuned in to watch Eastenders. In early 2009 on average 1.79 million teenagers tuned in to Hollyoaks. These audience ratings gave me an idea of the popularity of these TV Soap Opera’s and the sort of audiences they attract.

The website where I got the figures from was:

http://www.free-satellite-tv.co.uk/tv-ratings/uk-tv-ratings-260409.htm

Representation

The Soap Operas or Representing the people which are in society today, the characters in soap operas are stereotypical of the people in society.

Soap Opera History

History of Soap Opera

Soap Opera is a phrase which was first developed in the 1930’s in the USA. It was used to describe a radio series that was sponsored by a well known soap powder hence “soap”. The “Opera” part came from the idea that these were problems and other dramatic or melodramatic situations.

By the 1950’s all over the USA these serials had made it to the TV screen. They soon spread to across the world and their popularity grew by the million.

In the UK Soap Opera’s began on the radio on the BBC. In 1951 the BBC brought the public the radio soap opera The Archers, which is now the world’s longest running soap opera. The Archers attract over 25% of radio listeners in the UK.

The longest running TV Soap Opera is Coronation Street which was first aired on TV, December 1960.

After the massive success of American Soap Opera’s like Dallas, soap opera’s suddenly became extremely popular in the 1980’s. One of the biggest soap opera’s Eastenders started 19th February 1985.

The success of the Australian soaps Home and Away and Neighbours made the British Soap Opera Producers reconsider there target audience and the characters. The Australian Soaps were attracting teenagers, so the British needed to attract teenagers, so Hollyoaks began on 23rd October 1995, which today is the largest teenage soap opera. Through taking this move soap opera’s are far more popular today.

Brief

Brief

I will be producing an Advanced Portfolio on blogger which will comprise of a main text and two ancillary texts. I have chosen my texts from a Brief sheet.

The main text I will be designing is a website for a new TV Channel. It has to include a minimum of three hyperlinked pages with my own images, audio and video extracts. The two ancillary texts I have chosen is a newspaper advertisement for the new TV Channel and a double page spread for a listings magazine, for the new TV channel.

I will be presenting the research. The research will include analysis of other websites, and audience research, however, I will be doing a lot of research right throughout the production. I will also be presenting the Planning which includes templates, and drafts of designs. The evaluation will include the evaluation of my final products.

My website will include:

· Video

· Audio

· Images

I will be constantly updating my blog with all the pieces of production work I produce.
