Template 3 of Double Page Spread

This is my thrid template. I feel that this template uses the space well, in the real design I will sue the space better. I am going to use this template as a guideline to follow. I have put all the information i want onto this double page spread. I have come to the decision this is the template which is most suitable to use.

Template 2 of Double Page Spread

This is the second template of my double page spread. I feel I have used the space better on this template. However, I have not been able to fit the information in about the different programmes. So i am going to do a third design to see if i can fit the information of the programmes in as well. I need to advertise the different programmes on TV4U,s o people know about the different programmes that are on offer on TV4U.

Template 1 of Double Page Spread

This is my first double page spread template. I am making templates so I have an idea on how my template could be laid out. This template i designed on Microsoft Publisher. I feel the template is too crammed together, and i have tried to fit too much into such a small space. I need to conside on how I could use the space better then I have done.

LIIAR TV4U Double Page Spread

I researched existing TV Listings magazines which are already on the market. From looking at the magazines I feel the suitable one to publish the new TV Channel launch in is What’s on TV.

This TV Listings Magazine seems to appeal to everyone of all ages. Over 4 million people buy this TV listings magazine. The TV Listings magazine has the latest gossip, and latest news. As this magazine does interviews with soap stars. I am going to launch the double page spread by interviewing the stars from the new TV Channel, TV4U. The Two stars I am going to be interviewing is Sweet and Sour.

Language
The language of my double page spread will be the images. The images I am considering using, is an image of Sweet and Sour, the TV4U Logo, and images of the other shows on TV4U. I will also include plenty of text, this includes the interviews, the headline, and names of the show.
Background Colour
The double page spread is going to be bright and colourful , I am not going to use dark colours, because after looking at the articles, House and Dr Seuss’ Hears a Who, I realised the colours are quite bright. I know that bright colours connotate youth, so the colours I use are going to have to connotate youth, the colours that I could include, are light blues and whites. Usually in TV Listing Magazines, the main background colour used is White. I am going to consider this, as White is a good colour that makes text and images stand out.
Text
The headline of the double page spread is going to be bold, an din large letters so it stands out to the viewers eyes, and give an indication to what the article is going to be about. As I am going to be aiming my article at the audience aged 15-21, I need to make it appealing to them. From talking to people in the age group of 15-21, it seems that younger people don’t want to read too much. So I cannot include too much text. The text I do include need to be in colours that stand out from the light background. The text colours I am going to consider are Black and Purple. These colours are slightly darker, but I know that dark colours do appeal to younger people. I am going to include when the channel is launched, and what satellite and digital channels it is on.
TV Logo
I am going to include the TV Logo for TV4U so it becomes recognisable. I need my younger audience to recognise the logo, so they know to look out for the logo. It is to create a relationship with the audience in a way. The more recognised the logo becomes, the more people will tune in to this new TV Channel.

Institution

If I was to actually publish the double page spread in real life, I would use What's on TV. They would be the main institution who would design the double page spread, and who would interview the star. But as its only me who can work on this I will be the one designing the double page spread and doing the interview.
IPC connects is a recognised brand, that reaches out to the female population. The mass market of IPC is made up of 53% of the female population, this in reality is 10 million women! The digital brand of IPC connect reaches out to a further 2.4 million mass market women. IPC’s Connect Audience of mass market women ar every valuable and responsive main shoppers, and who are responsible for the vast majority of UK purchasing decisions.
Ideology
The ideology behind the double page spread is to advertise the new TV4U channel. I need to get the appropriate information across to the audience. The appropriate information i need t include is, when it is launching, what is on the TV Channel, and what Digital channels it is going to be on. The idea of interviewing the stars of TV4U is so the younger readers can see the sort of stars that are going to on the new TV Channel, it allows the younger people to recognise the stars. I want to endorse the sort of programmes that are on the channels, and convince the readers to tune in for the new TV programmes.
Audience
The audience I am aiming my double page spread at is young people aged 15-21 years old. The images I use are going to have to be contemporary and modern, as the audience I am aiming my TV channel at are young and contemporary
Representation
The audience i am representing is a young audience aged 15-21. I want bother genders to be able to watch my TV Channel and be entertained. I want the audience to be able to get in from college/ university, sit down and relax. I want the audience to watch a TV Channel that i will remember and switch back to when they next watch the television.

Research for TV Listings Magazine

1)What's on TV

This particular Magazine provides 4 million readers with a week of great value TV Gossip, very entertaining TV features which includes the latest soap news, puzzles, competitions and television listings. This particular magazine represents an audience who no- nonsense and who want ti be entertained with the latest soap stories and popular TV news and photos.

What’s on TV does not stop there, they even have a website where people can go to get the latest soap gossip, popular TV news, videos and online listings.

Website address: http://www.whatsontv.co.uk/

What’s on TV is a good listings magazine to possibly publish my double page spread due to the fact it is bought by 4 million people every week. It seems like a magazine people possibly take time to read, this is good for my new TV Channel because people will discover the new channel and look out for it.

2) TV Easy

This is the UK’s very first compact paid weekly TV Magazine. This magazine is a handy quick-flick guide and has easy to use colour coded tabs for the instant programme details, and a modern design. It makes it very easy for a person who is very busy to have a quick look through and be informed straight away about what to watch during the week.I don’t think this magazine would be suitable for my double page spread, because it looks like a magazine people don’t actually read, they just have a quick glance. If I want my new TV Channel to be noticed I need to people to see the article and read it, and not just have a quick glance.

3) TV Times

TV Times is one of the longest running TV listing magazines around. It has a respectable reputation within the TV industry. TV Times had a modern and bright look with one clear vision of what the readers of today want from their favourite TV magazine. In every issue of TV Times, there is big star interviews, more soap coverage than any other TV weekly listing magazine. It is the most easy to use digital listings. TV Times is in the premium sector as a quality TV weekly magazine that is popular with all the family.

TV Times is another TV listings magazine I would consider publishing my double page spread in because of the sort of reputation it has amongst the family. It seems that the TV Times is read by everyone, and I am trying to let all young people know about this new TV Channel. On the other hand, it seems that TV Times is mainly aimed at families, so it does not necessarily mean young teenagers would read this magazine.

4) TV Satellite Week

This TV listings magazine is the UK’s original and best weekly digital TV guide. It has a range of easy to use and specially designed planning features and makes it the ultimate guide to what is on digital channels such as BBC 3 and BBC4, Satellite, Cable and Freeview. This seems to be the main choice for digital TV users.

I think this is a high contender for my double page spread because it specializes in digital TV. As my new TV channel TV4U is on digital it needs to be in a digital magazine that people read and use to plan what they watch. It seems a lot of people read the magazine so it will be a good one to consider.

5)Soap Life

Soap Life is written by soap lovers, for soap lovers. This is a fortnightly magazine that gives its readers more news, more gossip, more stars and more pictures from their favourite soaps and shows than any other soap magazine. It has a unique mixture of news and gossip from the soap world.

Comparison of two Double Page Spreads from the listings magazine Sky.

The second double page spread is from the Sky Movies Magazine. The double page spread is looking at a new film that is going to be shown on Sky Movies. The new movie is called Dr Seuss’ Horton Hears A Who! The purpose of this article is allow people to know who have Sky, that this film can now be seen on Sky Movies Comedy and Sky Movies HD. The main audience this film is for, is children. But it seems that all ages can enjoy the film.

The film Dr Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who is an animated adaptation of the very popular and comical children’s book. The film is about an elephant called “Horton” (voiced by Jim Carrey) who discovers the very small world of Whoville, that is run by the chirpy Mayor of Whoville (voiced by Steve Carell) on a speck of dust.

Denotation

This Double Page Spread denotates an image representing the film, Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears A Who! Under the image is the headline “HD moment to remember”. Under the double page spread is a sub headline which reads “Dr Seuss Horton Hears A Who!” There is a smaller text style that reads “Showing from Sunday 14th March at 6:30pm on Sky Movies Comedy/ HD. There is more text that goes into that the film is about, then going across bottom of the page is the numbers 1-4. On the far right hand side is a Black box that talks about the movie company “MGM” going into HD.

The image for Dr Seuss is very bright, and happy compared to the image of House. This could be because this article is aimed at a younger audience, rather then an older audience. The House article has a lot of information crammed into one article, where as the Dr Seuss Article does not have as much information crammed in, this is because the article is aimed at a younger audience, and only the important points need to be pointed out.

Connotation

The image is representing the animated the film, the image shows the “Mayors’ Hall of Fame”. The Mayor’s Hall of Fame is very impressive as it stretches into the distance, this involves the reader as um makes them feel like they are part of this world. The Mayors Hall of Fame is a bright blue, the natural lighting flowing in through the windows this connotates a perfect world. Along the hallway are flowers in vases, all blooming and yellow this connotates happiness. The Mayor’s Hall of Fame is a bright blue, with portraits of the old mayors of Whoville, all smiling connotating that this is a happy place. The biggest object in this image is the current Mayor of Whoville. He is also animated. The character has a whacky hairstyle, with a quiff on top, and hair coming out the side of his head. His eyes are wide and blue and he has a huge smile on his face. The character is holding his arms out connotating he is a friendly character who is welcoming the reader to his world. The character is wearing a Blue top with a flared collar; it resembles something that the queen would wear. He is wearing a gold badge. The character is standing up straight which connotates he is a powerful figure in this world. The portraits of old mayors is Intertextual referencing famous piece of art, for example behind the Mayor’s head is a portrait of the Mona Lisa, but this is in the style of Dr Seuss.

The Dr Seuss image has happy connotations, whereas, the House image had connotations of loneliness. The world of Dr Seuss has connotations of a happy world because it is for a younger audience, who don’t need to know about the real world just yet. The image of House is aimed at an adult audience, and the image needed to represent the real world.

Language

The language of this double page spread is again, the image, the headline, the sub headline and other text.

The Image

The image representing the film , has stuck to the same sort of drawings and designs as the popular children’s books. The image is very appealing to younger children, as there is a nig friendly mayor smiling up out of the page. The image has so many components to look at, from the portraits on the wall, to the flowers going along the hall. The audience’s eye is grabbed by this captivating image. The image used for Dr Seuss looks far more appealing then the House image. The image of the caravan being broken down in the middle of the desert connotates loneliness and depression, and isnot that appealing, whereas, the image from the Dr Seuss article is bright and eye catching and Is far more appealing to the audience. The image is so unusual it makes the audience yearn for more, this leads to them wanting to see the film.

The Headline

The headline is in an eye catching purple that stands out from the white background. The headline reads “HD moment to remember”. This headline would make the audience question why this is going to be a moment to remember. It’s the biggest font on the page and immediately grabs the audience’s eye.

The sub headline

The sub headline is just the name of the film. “Dr Seuss’ Horton Hears A Who!” This gives the film rating allowing the audience to know it is suitable for all ages. The sub headline is in a Bold Black Font style so it stands out.

Other Text

The text underneath that reads ”Showing from Sunday 14th March at 6:30pm on Sky Movies Comedy/HD” this tells the audience when it is on. This text is in a larger font but is smaller then the headline and the sub headline. The other text on the page is in a smaller bolder font text style.

The text on the left hand side numbered 1- 4 is text informing the audience to what the arrows are pointing out, and explain everything the audience need to know.

Institution

The film Dr Seuss’ Horton Hears A Who! , is a 2008 Computer Generated Imagery Film which is based on the books by Dr Seuss. The film is made by Blue Sky Studios, and is the third Dr Seuss based film, following How the Grinch stole Christmas and The Cat in the Hat, however it is the first Dr Seuss film which is fully animated. Blue Sky Studios was founded 10 years ago, and it had a mission to be a superior photo-realistic, high resolution, computer generated characters for feature films, TV and entertainment industries. Some of the feature films they have had a hand in creating is Ice Age.

Ideology

The idea behind the film is that on 15th May in a Jungle called Nool, an elephant called Horton, the jungle‘s nature teacher, takes a quick cool dip in the pool. When he is in the water, a speck of dust floats past in the air, and then he hears a microscopic yelp coming from the speck of dust. Horton the elephant believes he heard a family of tiny creatures living on that speck of dust, the elephant places it on top of a pink fizzy clover that he holds on his trunk. He now has the challenge of finding this tiny city a new home. The idea behind the magazine si to tell the audience about what this film is about and when it is going to be on.

The main audience this filmed at is children. The storyline is aimed at children, using characters that children can enjoy.

Representation
