Comparison of two Double Page Spreads from the listings magazine Sky.

The first double page spread I am going to look at, is an article from the listing magazine Sky. The article I am analysing is about the cast of the TV show House. The article gives information about the different characters in House. The article is for people who have Sky and that are the fans of the show House. The article is also for anyone that wants to be entertained, and be told about shows that available to watch on Sky.

Denotation

The denotation of this article is that most of the double page spread is taken up by an image of the cast of House. The image is set in the desert, the sky is blue, with vultures flying in the air, going across the middle of the image is a caravan, around the caravan is the different characters of House, in the forefront, is the lead character called House, he is staring straight up out of the page. At the bottom of the page is a white box that has the headline, “MEET THE CAST HOUSE” with the sub headline “Dr Gregory House is back and still battling his demons, in a brand-new time slot…” In the white text box, is smaller Yellow rectangular box with text that reads “HD NEW HOUSE SUNDAYS 10pm, SK1 (170hd/106)”, the rest is information on the show. On the right hand side of the page is the information about the characters. Each character has information about them. In the top right hand corner is a small quote that reads “ working in medicine is no holiday for the team at Princetin-Plainsbro”.

Connotation

The TV show is about a Dr House, who is fighting a drug addiction. In the new series that is on soon, he has new come off the drugs and is in a lonely place. The image used for this double page spread is set in the desert. The desert connotates loneliness and emptiness. The vultures flying over the desert connotates death and destruction. The death, destruction, loneliness and emptiness could be the storylines that are coming up on House. Th caravan in the middle of the image is a dull dark. The caravan is what the characters are going on holiday in, however, in the image it has broken down, this connotates that the holiday is going to be a bumpy ride which represents the show and what the show has in store for the audience.

Dr Robert Chase

Doctor Robert Chase is wearing a golf cap, he has a open shirt and chequered shorts and is cooking at a barbecue whiles reading. The whole outfit he is wearing connotates that he is in an emotional state. He looks nothing like a doctor, and looks like a slob. The character is unshaven, and looks depressed. He looks scruffy which connotates that he does not care what he looks like anymore.

Dr Remy “Thirteen” Hadley

Remy is wearing a small purple vest; she has tight shorts on, and is climbing onto the caravan. Remy has a pair of binoculars around her neck and is holding onto a cross bow and she is wearing knee pads. Remy looks like Lara Croft. The whole image Remy has represents action. The way she is not holding onto the caravan and is just managing to stay on with her leg connotates she is powerful and independent. The way she has her back straight connotates she has authority and will use her authority to get what she wants. The canoe on the top of the caravan next to her, connotates she is action woman, and that she likes action in her life.

Dr James Wilson

Dr James Wilson is wearing a blue Flat cap, a light brown tank top over a light green t-shirt and chequered trouser, and is holding a golf club. The neutral colours he is wearing represents, he is very laid back with his life. The golf club he is holding connotates that he is sporty. The way he is leaning connotates he is looking out for something.

Dr Eric Foreman

Dr Eric Foreman is sat on the step of the caravan. Eric is sat down and is wearing a white vest top, and white jogging bottom with a red stripe going down the side, on his right leg, he has his right arm balanced, balancing a weight. The white outfit he is wearing connotates perfection. As Eric is exercising his muscles, it connotates that he wants a perfect body with muscles.

Dr Gregory House

There is a head shot of Gregory House, he is in the centre of the image, this connotates that this is the central character to look out for. Gregory is wearing a Black baseball cap with a phrase that reads “I’m in charge”, the phrase is in Yellow Box. House is also wearing a navy t-shirt. He is unshaven. The unshaven look connotates that he is unprofessional and does not take care of himself. The phrase on the baseball cam, “I’m in charge” connotates that he is the boss, however, it seems that he is big headed with it as well, because ti seems that he needs to let everyone know he is. The dark colours he is wearing connotates authority. The way House is staring up at the reader connotates a calling for help. He is looking at the reader straight in the eye, he looks helpless. This particular character is a form of inter-textual referencing because he has pscyhological problems and like Sherlock Holmes has problems with drug addiction.

Dr Lisa Cuddy

Lisa Cuddy is sat on the top of the Caravan sun bathing, she is wearing a very revealing bikini and sunglasses. It seems that because she is wearing very little that it connotates she is confident with the way she looks and that she doesn't care where she is. The large sunglasses she is wearing that covers half her face connotates she is glamorous and ambitious and that she enjoys the glamorous side of life. Lisa Cuddy’s bikini is a dark red which connotates she is passionate.

Dr Chris Taub

Chris is shaving at the Caravan’s mirror. He is wearing a Blue top that is tucked into his cropped trousers, around his neck he is wearing a hat, on his feet he is wearing walking shoes. Chris looks small compared to the caravan which connotates that he does not have much authority and he is not that important. The explorer outfit connotates that he likes to explore. The Blue top he is wearing connotates wisdom.

Dr Allison Cameron

Allison is fixing the broken down caravan. She is wearing a red Dress, the dress looks tatty and is hanging off her shoulder. Allison looks harassed and upset. The colour red which she is wearing connotates she is passionate, but the way the dress is hanging off her, it connotates that she is in desire for something or someone. Allison looks like a damsel in distress.

Language

The language of this article is the image of the Caravan and the characters, the headline; sub headline and text.

The Image

The image of the broken down caravan, with the characters doing different activities from golfing to fixing the caravan connotates that the characters are in for a bumpy ride in the new series of House. The image introduces the characters. The image which grabs the audiences attention immediately is Dr Gregory House, he is in the central of the double page spread. This connotates he is the central and most important character. The dark clothing he is wearing connotates that he has authority over the characters. He is not smiling and has a serious face which connotates he is not a man to be messed around with. But the way he is staring up at the reader connotates a sort of vulnerability or weakness that he has. The image is so bizarre it catches the audiences eye, and makes them yearn for more, as they see the characters they like in an unusual situation.

The White Box

The white box contains all the text that talks about the new series of House. The colour white symbolizes hospitals. This is appropriate because it is a medical drama.

The Text

Headline

The headline of the text is "Meet the cast... HOUSE". This immediately is going to inform the audience about the characters. As this article is to advertise that the new series is going to come back, and who the characters are in the new series. The first line of the title "Meet the cast..." is in a lower cap bold style. This signifies that the first part of the headline is not too important. The second line of the headline "HOUSE" is in bold capital grey letters. This immediately grabs the audiences eye, and straight away they know it is about their favourite show House. Although the colour grey is dull it connotates the two extremes of his personality mixed into one. The colour white would indicate his kind caring side and black his darker side, and mixing these two colours makes the colour Grey.

Sub Headline

The sub headline is beneath the headline. The sub headline reads "Dr Gregory House is back and still battling his demons, in a brand-new time slot..." this sub headline raises questions for the readers about what his demons are. The word demons could connotate, the battle with his drug addiction, his personality disorder, and his colleagues. As the sub headline is not as important as the headline it is a smaller black font, the text is not in bold and is small cap, this is so the audiences eye is not drawn away from the headline.

Bold Yellow Rectangular Box

In the yellow rectangular box is some text which informs the audience when there new show is on, and what channel the show is going to be broadcast on. The first word "NEW" is in a bold red colour. The colour red connotates a warning, warning that the new show House is on. The second word "House" is in a bold black font style so it catches the audiences eye. The rest of the text is in a smaller font style, but can still be noticed because it stands out from the yellow box.

First line of text

When the audience start to read the actual article, the very first line is in a bold black font style " Last time we were on the wards at" this is to jog the memory of the reader. The rest of the text on the left hand side of the double page spread is in a smaller black text.

Text on Right hand side of Double Page Spread

The text on the right hand side is about the individual characters in House. So the audience can find the characters easily and quickly, the characters in the image have a number again them, this is relevant to the article as the text in the white box has a number against them. The name of the Doctor is in a Bold Grey font style, so the audience have their eye drawn in to that particular doctor. On the second line is the name of the actor or actress who plays that character. The rest of the characters are in a smaller Black text.

Institution

The original channel it was shown on was Fox, but now the show is broadcast on the popular channel Sky. House is a co-production of Heel and Toe Films, Shore Z Productions and Bad Hat Harry Productions and are in association with Universal Media Studios for Fox. The executive producers of the show are Paul Attanasio, Katie Jacobs (heads of Heel and Toe Films); David Shore (Shore Z Productions; Bryan Singer (head of Bad Hat Productions); these have all been the executive producers since the show started. More writers joined the show as it became popular, some of the writers include Lawrence Kaplow, Peter Blake and Thomas L Moran.

Final Design of my TV4U Newspaper Advertisement

This is my final design of the TV4U Advertisement. If I was to publish this design I would publish it in tabloid newspapers such as The Star and The Sun. As a lot of people read these sorts of newspapers to be entertained. Below is the final image of my advertisement.

I have hand drawn the newspaper advertisement, and scanned the design onto the computer, I then edited the design on the software Fireworks. The ideology behind the newspaper advertisement is that it is a hand drawn doodle done at college. As the TV Channel TV4U is representing an audience between school and university age, i wanted something that would grab a younger person's eye.
Denotation
The image denotates at the top of the image clouds and light bulbs. Underneath is the text saying what digital channels TV4U is going to be broadcast on; Freeview Channel 26; Virgin Channel 115; Sky Channel 117. In the centre of the page is the TV4U Logo, going around the TV4U Logo is stars. On the far right hand side, coming from the right hand side is a balloon. Along the bottom of the page is building, and a sign that reads "I LOVE YOU", with a pretty pattern next to it.

Connotation
Starting at the top of the page is light bulbs. The light bulbs connotate ideas, young people are full of inspiration and ideas, i wanted to represent the young audience, so I used typical icon of an idea, a light bulb. The clouds are meant to connotate a young person coming up with the ideas, the light bulbs have lit up because this particular person has thought up an idea. The eharts coming from the clouds represents the love of the TV Channel. The logo is in the centre, as if it is the moon in the sky. The star connotates that the channel is going to have glitz and glamour, this comes in the form of the reality TV programmes. The balloon coming out of the stars connotates the celebration of the launching of the new TV channel. The city that runs across the bottom of the page is meant to represent the modern conventions of today's world and the modern society we live in, the TV4U logo is shining over the city so it connotates that the people are watching the new TV Channel. The "I LOVE YOU" sign going down the side of the city connotates one of the many emotions that young people feel, which is love.

Draft/ Template

This is what my Newspaper Advertisement is going to look like. I am going to scan this design onto the computer and edit the design using the program Fireworks.

TV4U Advertisement. Template 2

I have tried out a second template for the advertisement. Again it is on its side, and will hopefully catch the audiences eye. Below is a image of the template.

Template 1. TV4U Advertisement

The idea behind my advertisement is to be different. I know that usually in newspapers, advertisements are not on their side, however, my advertisement is going to be different. I think that if my advertisement is eye catching enough, people will turn the newspaper sideways to have a look at the advertisement. Below is an image of a possible template I could use for the design of my TV4U advertisement. The advertisement is going to be aged at young people between the ages of 15-21.

LIIAR- My New TV4U Avertisement

LIIAR for my TV4U Advertisement

Language
The language of my TV4U advertisement is the images, the colours, and the text I use. The main idea for my TV4U advertisement is, that the TV Advertisement itself is going to be a drawing a person has done whilst being bored at college. The design will obviously be produced by me. But as the audience I am aiming my TV Channel at is between school and university age I need the advertisement to represent people aged 15-21 years old. I am going to use very few images on my advertisement, I want the TV4U advertisement to be plain but eye-catching. I have made the decision to draw the design out, scan it onto the computer and edit on the computer. The main image I am going to use is the TV4U Logo, as I want everyone to recognise the logo and be familiar with it. The text I am going to use is going to be plain and readable so people can notice it. I will also include the information on which channels TV4U is available on.

Ideology
The idea behind the TV4U advertisement, is that someone has been bored at college and has made a doodle. The advertisement is going to jump to, because it is going to be contemporary. I want the advertisement to catch the audiences eye, and for them to stop and look. The reason why the actual design is going to be hand drawn is because it is done by a student (me) at college. I will take the image and scan it onto the computer, the next step I will take is to then edit it on Fireworks, to make it look like a proper advertisement which has the appropriate information. The information included will be the channels that it is on.

Institution
The institution is me. I will be designing this advertisement. I will be the one planning, designing and edit the advertisement. This will take a lot of time to do.

Audience
The audience I aiming my advertisement at, is people aged 15-21 years old. This is the age group I was originally aiming my TV Channel at. I feel that in today's media, there is not enough TV Channels dedicated to young people. I have tried to design a channel that young people can watch and chill.

Representation
The TV4U Advertisement will be representing young people who want to be entertained. It will be representing young people who are chilled out, and want a good time.

LIIAR- Newspaper Advertisement

The Newspaper I am designing my advertisement for is a tabloid newspaper called WEEKLY NEWS. I noticed that advertisements for TV Channels mainly appear in the Tabloid newspapers such as The Sun and The Daily Star. In the tabloid newspapers they appear in colour rather then in Black and White in Broadsheet Newspapers. Tabloid Newspapers also publish more entertain advertisements.

Language
The newspaper I am designing my advert for is Weekly News. I looked through broadsheet newspapers and realised that there is hardly any TV Channel adverts. I looked through the tabloid newspapers, The Sun and Daily Star and found two adverts. The advert I am going to look at is The Ant and Dec Advert for Push the Button from the Daily Star.
Background
The background is eye catching, and connotates the sound waves which are coming from the button. The button is Ant. The background is a red and a dark red. This background allows all the different components of the advertisement to stand out.
The Hosts
The hosts of the how are Ant and Dec and they are positioned in an amusing way on this advertisement. Dec is pushing Ants head into his suit which connotates that Ant is the button. Although they are wearing plain black suits, they still stand out from the Red background. The reason they stand out is because the positions they are in. Ant and Dec are the first people that you look at on the advertisement, they grab the audiences eye straight away.
The Text
The bold text stands out from the red background because it is a chunky yellow bold text style. "PUSH THE BUTTON. ANT & DEC'S NEW GAME SHOW. STARTS TONIGHT AT 7:45". Although there is little text on this advertisement, you are told what the show is, when it is on, and who it is presented by. The information is condense and straight to the point. The way the yellow text curves connotates the sound coming from the button.
The Logo
The ITV Logo is at the bottom of the text because people recognise the logo, although the logo is only small, people will still notice the logo. ITV1 is a recognisable TV channel and brand, so it does not have to be too large.
Ideology
The ideology behind this advertisement was to grab the audiences eye, and draw the audience in to want to know about the new programme. The website is even given so people can go on to the internet and find out more about this brand new show on ITV1. The ideology behind this advertisement is to communicate the show that this is a game show, this is entertaining and funny.he audience can immediately tell its a game show because the producers have put a lot of thought into the advertisement. You can tell its a game show from the name of the programme "PUSH THE BUTTON" the name of the programme is in big bold yellow letters. The second point that gives a clue that this is a game show is that Dec is pushing Ant's head into his suit. A person pushing a button usually connotates a game show. You can tell immediately that this new programme is going to be entertaining and funny is because t is presented by two very funny recognisable faces-Ant and Dec. What makes the advertisement even funnier is the way Ant and Dec have posed.
Institution
The institution of this advertisement is the channel which broadcasts the show, which is ITV and the newspaper which is the Daily Star. The channel ITV have been very clever because they have published this poster in a paper which is very popular with people. As the Daily Star is a Tabloid paper that gives the latest celeb news and the latest world news people buy the newspaper to be entertained and informed. This advertisement does both in one go, it informs people by tell them what show it is, when its on, and what channel it is on. It entertains people because it is Ant and Dec and they have posed in a funny way.
Audience
The audience of this advertisement is anyone of any age. As the programme "PUSH THE BUTTON" has been put on at 7:45, this is when the family is sat together around the television. looking for something to watch that entertains them. The advertisement is aimed at any age. You can tell his because they have used two men Ant and Dec who everyone of all ages look up to. They have used a recognisable brand Maltesers which anyone of any age eats. The whole advertisement screams to everyone.
Representation
The advertisement is representing people of all ages. The advertisement has used Ant and Dec, two men that are grown men who are childish. Everyone can relate to them. "Push the Button" is obviously representing an audience who want to be entertained so they needed to use two presenters which would create the entertaining atmosphere they were looking for.
